Dr. Gaby Cora’s Mini Burnout Quiz

Ten statements. About two minutes. An honest look at where you stand right now.

This quiz came out of Leading Under Pressure, and the book had one question at its heart: do you need a coach, or a doctor? Dr. Corá’s answer was both. She is a psychiatrist who coaches executives, and at the time nobody was putting those two things together.

That is why the statements below ask about your chest, your sleep, and your Sunday nights rather than your job satisfaction. It is not a diagnostic test and was never meant to be one: in 2010 there was no clinical category to test against, and the World Health Organization would not settle on a definition of burnout for another nine years.

The full quiz runs to twenty-five statements and is in the book. This shorter one exists because a journalist asked for it: while reporting “When the CEO Burns Out” in 2013, Leslie Kwoh wanted a version readers could finish in a couple of minutes.

Ten is not simply a shorter twenty-five. Dr. Corá kept the items that had proved to matter across all three of the rooms she works in: the psychiatrist’s, the consultant’s, and the coach’s. So the questions that survived are the ones you can observe. Chest pain mistaken for a heart attack. The drink that has become necessary. The pills. The Sunday afternoon. Not one of them asks whether you enjoy your job.

Answer honestly. Nothing you enter leaves your device.

1 I have medical problems because of the excessive stress I experience (tension headaches, anxiety, depression, heart problems, or gastrointestinal problems).
2 I have increased my alcohol drinking at night to unwind from a stressful day.
3 I get easily annoyed with my friends and family when I come back home because of stress at work.
4 I have been stressed out for the past six months.
5 I give all my energy to my work and I have no energy left in the evenings and over the weekend.
6 I feel my job security is threatened.
7 The thought of going to work every day stresses me out.
8 I am stressed out all the time.
9 I have been to the emergency room thinking I was having a heart attack and was told I had a panic attack instead.
10 I take sleeping pills (over-the-counter or prescribed) to sleep at night.
